Chile has a history of wine-making dating back to the Spanish Conquerors, but wine truly came into its own when noble French cuttings were planted in the mid- nineteenth century. Chile's vineyards, located in the former provinces of Aconcagua, Valparaiso, and Santiago, are planted in valley microclimates. These valleys are remnants of the last glacial age, when waters, rushing down the steep Andean slopes, carved a series of valleys laterally across the country and deposited rich fertile soil in their wake.

Chileans were very lucky when they imported the wine plants. Shortly after the cuttings arrived in the New World, French vineyards were struck with a plague that destroyed the roots of the European wine parent stock. Europeans saved their wine industry by grafting onto American plants.

After this journey into Chile's beautiful countryside, tasting the wines, walking through the vineyards, and meeting the local people, you will have a much richer understanding and appreciation for the history and heritage of fine Chilean wines!
