Sadhus Galore: The Maha Kumbh Mela
2013: The Year of The Maha Mela in Allahabad
2013 is a very important year - the year
of the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad.
A Khumbh Mela is a conflagration of
sadhus and other Hindu pilgrims at
either the Ganges or Godavari Rivers,
with the goal of purifying themselves by
bathing in these holy waters. These
melas are held in four cities, Nashik,
Haridwar, Ujjain and Allahabad. Every
six years, the Ardh Mela is celebrated in
either Haridwar or Allahabad. The Purna
Kumbh or Maha Kumbh occurs in the
four cities every twelve years. This year,
the Maha Kumbh Mela is held in
Allahabad.
Join Myths And Mountains President, Dr.
Antonia Neubauer and travel from Delhi
through Agra, Gwalior and Orchha down
to the famous temples of Khajuraho and
then on to the wildlife park at
Bandhavgarh to hopefully see tigers.
Then, as the climax of the trip, travel to
Allahabad to witness this most unusual
spectacle of mass devotion, with its
ritual bathing, chanting, dancing, slms-
giving, and religious debates - a Maha
Kumbh Mela! While there, you will also
have the opportunity to listen to a
lecture by noted Indian scholar, Shantum
Seth.
