A time for laughter, song, and Tibetan equestrian skills

This is a rare opportunity to witness a Khampa horse festival on the Tibetan Plateau. Get to know the Khampa warriors, visit unspoiled monasteries, appreciate the different cultures of Yunnan and Sichuan, and revel in the spectacular beauty of the region.

Travel from the Naxi Plains to the nomadic grasslands of Litang and Batang, returning to Lijang through the deep Mekong gorge in the shadow of Mt. Kawakarpo. Along the way, share tea with the villagers, soak in hot springs, and dance and sing with the Tibetans. A time of joy and wonder!

Day 1 Arrive Kunming; Sightseeing including flower market. LD
Day 2 Fly to Gyalthang; Visit Ganden Sumtsanling Monastery BLD
Day 3 Explore Ringha Temple along with the museum and old town BLD
Day 4 Visit some villages at the base of the Lanze Mountains, near the Napha Reserve. BLD
Day 5 Drive to Shating BLD
Day 6 Continue to Litang BLD
Day 7 Opening day of the Horse Festival; Also explore Ganden Tubchen Chokhorling Monastery BLD
Day 8 Enjoy the horse festival BLD
Day 9 Morning at the festival. Evening drive to Batang and Batang Chode Monastery. None
Day 10 Drive south along Yangtse gorges to Derong. BLD
Day 11 Drive along the Ding Chu river gorges to Dechen and then on to Namkha Tashi. BLD
Day 12 Explore Namkhatashi and view of Kawakarpo. BLD
Day 13 Ascend to the Baima Pass and enter the Baima Nature Reserve. Return to Gyalthang. BLD
Day 14 Enjoy the hot springs of Shagey. Afternoon foot massage. BLD
Day 15 Drive back to Lijang and attend a Naxi music and dance concert. BLD
Day 16 Fly back to Kunming and connect out. BL
