Upper Dolpa, Crystal Mountain & Shey Gompa
Trek up over the high mountain passes into the Kathmandu Valley
From Shey, in 1954, David Snellgrove, the noted scholar and Tibetologist, undertook a seven-month trek that led him up over the high mountain passes into Dolpo and out across Mustang into the Kathmandu Valley. Although most people have never read Snellgrove´s account of his trip, many learned of this beautiful section of Nepal from Peter Mathiesson´s The Snow Leopard or George Shaller´s Stones of Silence.
Legend dictates that a demoness fled here during the time of Guru Rinpoche´s conversion of Tibet´s resident spirits, offering local people a gigantic turquoise to keep her passage a secret. Guru Rinpoche transformed the turquoise into a lump of dung, and the disgruntled people revealed the hiding place of the demoness. In revenge she called down a flood upon their village, submerging it beneath the lake. The legend is mythic summary of the ancient struggle between Bon Po and Buddhists. The Buddhists won, but Bon Po remain, even here in and around Dolpo.
