Rhythms of the Villages Around Muktinath
Traditions of Nepalese culture
Tradere, to hand over, is the Latin root of the word tradition; and that is what this trip is about - Thakali family and cultural traditions. All too often on trips, one rushes from village to village, rarely spending enough time to see how the people live and work, much less to truly get to know those individuals whose lands we are visiting.
This very special journey takes travelers to a small Thakali villages in Nepal in the mid-western region of Nepal in the Jomsom area for an opportunity to spend time with the local people and learn about their traditions, religion, and day-to-day family activities. On another level, it is an opportunity to learn how the people of a country pass on their traditions to their own people and the problems of transmission of culture in a world that has changed and imported so many alien cultures.
The journey will take you from the Kathmandu Valley to Pokhara in the shadow of the Annapurna range. From Pokhara, you fly to Jomsom, and trek to some of the different villages along the Kali Gandhaki River in Lower Mustang. Your travels will take you all the way to the pilgrimage site of Muktinath one of the two most important sites for both Hindus and Buddhists in all of Nepal. Along the way, in addition to making friends of the local people, you may enjoy wonderful views of Dhaulagiri, Niligiri, Tuckche and other sky-touching peaks. Your trek finishes with time in the walled city of Kagbeni and a flight back to Kathmandu from Jomsom. In the spring, you will camp along the way: but in the winter, with the cold, you will stay in local inns.
